Anniversary Adventures

We know it's not France, but part of our anniversary adventure was getting backpacking equipment. We took off sunday up a valley {South Fork} in Eagle River to Symphony/Eagle Lakes.  It's about a
7-8 mile hike.  As we hiked back, we passed people warning us of a bear . . . escalating my fear of hiking at 9 at night.  Finally at 11 we pitched our tent on Flat Rock {5-6' above ground}, easing my fear of a bear.  But at 3 o'clock I awoke to the bear next to me checking us out.  He hung out all day grazing for berries about 400 yards from camp.  Monday we enjoyed the amazing weather and scenery to the lakes and fished for grayling.  I was the champ for the day with a 15"-er.  On the spine of the mountain between the lakes was a huge shelter that people camped in.  We have never been backpacking before, but with a couple more necessities, I think we'll really like this sport!

Happy Anniversary! is it 10 years now?

I have to say it makes me so sad to read the blogs of all you Alaskans. I wish I could have made it up there this summer!

Backpacking is on my to-do list for our visit next summer. I have never been but always wanted to try it out. I was planning on making Miki and Lance take us but it might be fun to have a bigger group if your game.

I love hiking up South Fork! I've never backpacked out there though. The first time I ever walked out to the lakes I was like 5 months pregnant. Had I known how long I'd be hiking and the amount of rocks I'd cross I would have stayed home. It looks so gorgeous. I'm glad you didn't get eaten by the bear.

wow this trip really seems like it was fun!! It looks beautiful there, and a bear so close to where you were sleeping?! You're brave. How is the grayling? Did you eat it where you were? Just like Bear Grylls would do it, I hope. :) Happy Anniversary!

yeah, the bear seemed like a dream, but i know it wasn't since we saw it!! we didn't eat the graylings. some people really like to eat them, they say they are like butter, but we just threw them back. you would get a kick out of it, we should take you!!

How fun that you guys were able to do this. You got my biggest fear out of the way right off. Waking to a bear sniffing around, aahhh. Happy 10 years you guys are great together!
